Himachal Pradesh or the “Land of the Gods” goes back in history with its unique, dissimilar customs, traditions and heritage. The history of the Himachali people dates back to the Indus Valley civilization and with them, the culture voyaged to the present. Be it their colorful costumes, delicate enthusiastic dance forms or their exceptional festivals; the people of Himachal enjoy putting on a vibrant show. And what makes it even more attractive is that each and every region in the state has its own specific custom!

The dreams of yesterday are the hopes of today and the reality of tomorrow. Science has not yet mastered prophecy. We predict too much for the next year and yet far too little for the next ten.

1.Custom of Himachal:

Be it their colorful costumes, delicate enthusiastic dance forms or their exceptional festivals; the people of Himachal enjoy putting on a vibrant show. And what makes it even more attractive is that each and every region in the state has its own specific custom! When it comes to the costumes worn by the women and men of the state, it usually consists of ‘kurtas’, ‘salwars’ and shirts. But what makes it stand out from the rest of the nation is that the outfits are handwoven and represent the grace and pride of the people. The men stick to casual attire compromising of ‘dhotis’, ‘kurta’ and a ‘turban’, while the women are also found in ‘kurtas’ and ‘ghaghri’. Due to the cool weather, shawls are also a common preference amongst the people as is the handloom industry. Another standout element of the costume is the ‘Kullu hat’. The vivid colours are an integral part of a man’s costume adding to the overall attire. And for the women, it is the jewelry, which is skilled and crafted by the people out of silver. The jewelry consists of anklets, daggers, bracelets, head gear etc. The vibrance of their culture is represented via the intrinsic jewelry. .

2.Folk Dances:

Another part of history that still remains with the people, are the various folk dances. The dances usually to appreciate, please or attract the blessing of the almighty or to showcase the daily routine and hardships of life. These dances are commonly performed at occasions or festivals. A famous dance from is ‘Nati’, which is an artistic representation of nature, trees, rivers etc. It is accompanied with catchy music and eye-catching costumes. This dance is extremely energetic and is seen as a celebratory dance. Apart from this there’s also ‘Jhainta’ which is a dance that gives energy to the people and makes them bold, ‘Chhanak Chham’ which is done by the Buddhists in monasteries and ‘Dangi’ where only the women dance to please a goddess during harvest. The reason for such vivacious dance forms, music and culture is partly because of the religious beliefs and popular customs of the people of Himachal Pradesh. Hence all of this is celebrated through pulsating festivals which usually allow the people to enjoy the season, religion and trade. Kullu Dussehra is the most popular festival that attracts tourist from all over. It’s a magnificent processional pulled off with colour, music, dance, making it a grand occasion. It’s done to mark the return of Lord Rama to his hometown of Ayodhya. It is one of the festivals that should not be missed and usually happens in the month of October.

The rich culture and tradition of a state are portrayed through dance, music, festivals and the people. The exquisite heritage of Himachal is an amalgamation of all this along with vibrant hues, unstoppable energy and explosive energy. To be a part of such a spectacle would be a once in a lifetime experience and it will instill a sense of pride and fervor into you! Therefore, the fiery, creative culture of Himachal Pradesh is an experience that will definitely leave you steeped in amusement!
